DANGAST - SMALL COSY VILLAGE AT THE NORTH SEA

One of the places that have been known by a lot of people in whole Germany. It is a small village with a spa and salt water pools with a view to the beach, an old house on top of a hill that is still baking their cakes traditionally and you taste it. Get a hot chocolate with extra whipped cream, rhubarb cake and sit outside while watching the children at the strand and the waves dancing happy to them.

You can take a long walk, horse riding, camping or get a room for the weekend. There are a lot of options and nothing is really far away.

HOW TO GET THERE

Dangast is in the North West of Germany at the Jade Bight, a small part of the North Sea which is surrounded by moors, lush fields and plenty of sheep.

The town dates back to the early 1100s and was destroyed several times due to high waters.

Exact dates can be found on squared shapes rocks while taking a walk in Dangast at the beach.

You'll get there by bicycle, just take one of the many tours over the dykes to see the true beauty of the Frisian landscape. Other than that you can take the car, bus or foot, depending on where you come from and where you are staying.

The small town is well known for having one of the best cakes in the North, the same for hot chocolate and the feeling of always being welcome, no matter where you come from.

WHAT TO DO

Dangast has a lot of activities and things you can do all year around. From simple as just taking a long beach walk, to drinking a cold beer in a pub, or exploring the old houses and streets that are over hundred years old and a true treasure of history.

Hundreds of years back, the entire area of the Jade Bight or in German, Jadebusen, which means Jade's breast, have been frequently changed through the tides, storms and mankind.

There have been villages in the swimming moors, but the last one was destroyed because of a thunderstorm in the early 1900s and cannot be visited any more.

A small sneak peek you get while watching one of my first videos right here. Don't worry, it is not super long, but specially for winter you get a first good view of what awaits you. Maybe it seems a bit grey in the beginning, but still it has its fairy like touch to it. All foggy and mystical.

Don't get confused by the Cover. Northern Germans are all crazy about art. Cold winter days, aye?!

LIST OF THINGS YOU CAN DO

KURHAUS & CAKE

The Kurhaus Dangast was built in the 1800s and is a family establishment since 1884. Now, already the fourth generation is making visitors all year around happy.

On top of the Geest, a coastal sandy heathland that only can be found in the north of Germany, resides the mansion with its rustic look. While being there, you have a nice view from a dyke made out of stone to the Jadebusen and Wadden Sea - National Hertiage which is always changing its dress caused by the tides and always promises a different ambience.

No matter of how good or bad the weather might be, you can decide to sit inside or outside. Don't miss the Frisian-tea or a hot pot of hand brewed coffee. Quality is first priority and the comfort same for a good feeling is assured.

You can have a rest, a nice chat with your friends, read a nice book or enjoy the view of the Wadden Sea. Don't miss out to take a long walk in the mudflat. It feels surprisingly good and many people that are not afraid of getting dirty take a frequent mud bath which is very healthy for your skin.

Never forget to order one slice of the famous Frisian Rhubarb cake that is, so the legends says, the most sold cake in entire Friesland.

NORDSEEBAD DANGAST

Is very close to the Kurhaus and in case you fancy a walk, just go ahead and feel the sand under your feet.

The water is naturally rich on iodine which is having a magical healing effect on your body and mind. During the winter time some parts are closed due the weather, but it is generally all year long open.

From just a family day, to spa, sauna, mother - child courses and more can be booked and enjoyed while being in beautiful Friesland.

SHIP ETTA

Get your ticket for a nice boat tour and get to know some history of the area. The Etta is part of Dangast like the Kurhaus and is never getting bored.

Visitors all over the world already have been on that little ship and the captain collected bit by bit flags of all the different countries to make the stay as comfortable as it can be. You can get a cup of tea, coffee, beer, lemonade, something for the sweet tooth or hearty like sausages. The entire trip will be around 2 hours and usually a relaxed one, just in case there are some sensitive stomachs around.

A total of 145 passengers can be on Etta and the Opening Hours are still written down traditionally. To the left the dates, middle departure and to the right the prices and how long. Depending on the days you get the chance to visit the light house or taking a trip to the areas where seals chill and relax.

ART & CRAFTS

Next to the Kurhaus you'll find several smaller houses. One of them is a shop that sells home-made sculptures collected shells, vintage objects, jewellery, postcards and much more. In the same building, only another room you can be lucky and find an artist at his work.

Dangast is one of those towns that is inspiring a lot of artists from all kinds of different fields.

At the weekends, you can see some artists with their stands in front of the Kurhaus. They are selling paintings, belt buckles, clothes such as knitted socks, scarfs, or maybe your fancy home-made honey candies and other sweets?

Only the little moving stand which always had the worlds best pop corn is missing for years and was always a part of my childhood.

MUSEUM OF CURIOSITIES SPIJÖÖK

Spilöök which means as much as comedic entertainment is coming from Plattdeutsch, a dialect that was spoken in Friesland.

From a funny chat, to a lot of interesting objects, like the single use submarine or one of many locks that Napoleon has used in 1806 to stop the ships to get in or out of the many smaller and bigger harbours. But the Friesen (how the inhabitants are called in Friesland), haven't been stupid and copied the key to open the lock again.

Other than that, every single year the team of the museum is preparing and planing new expeditions to expand the exhibition.

Tickets and more you'll find here.

SWIN-GOLF IN JÜHRDENERFELD For a fun day you should check out the Swin-Golf which is open most of the times during the year and is residing in a beautiful, traditional and idyllic Frisian landscape.

Or, in case you are not feeling like any sports, just stop by for a nice, relaxing afternoon and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee with a slice of cake. Those are home baked and very delicious. But who can deny pastries that are just made for you to eat?

MELKHUS

Since the Klosterhof is straight on a route that is favoured by a lot of cyclists, it's no wonder that they opened an authentic Melkhus which is kind of natural for the northern German to stop by and take a break.

No matter what kind of traveller, be it cycling, walking, car, skateboarding, horse riding are always welcome to enjoy a glass of fresh milk or any other products they offer to be strengthened.

KLOSTERHOFCAFÉ

The family so called zu Jührden, who is owning these little bit of heaven spared no efforts to keep the typical Frisian ambient during their renovations of the Klosterhofcafé.

Travel back in time and inhale the flair of history and traditions while enjoying a refreshment of tea, coffee and of course, home-made cake.

HOFLADEN

Whoever has some more time to spend, and wants to take home a true piece of the region, should stop by at the Hofladen, which is basically a small, traditional store that is offering products of the season. Such as asparagus, potatoes, honey, marmalade and jam, strawberries, ham and home-made sausages to only mention a few things, because there is so much more to explore.

You like to try new things, get there and check on their products which are all from the region and usually organic.

SWIMMING MOOR AND SKULPTURENPFAD SEHSTEDT

The swimming moor and the place where salty water meets freshwater and is the world wide only outer dyke moor which has been part of the inland before.

Within years building more and more sea walls the Jade Bight flooded the marshlands, which disconnected the Swimming Moor and the sea from each other. Because of that a new and unique biosphere was born. Take the chance to visit the moor as long as its still present. Due to more and more floodings this habitat won't exist for ever.

Next to it there is the Skulpturenpfad in Jade. A path that is going through the salt marsh and is acompanied by 13 sculptures of the artist Gerd Haschen which is making the experience of Art and Nature even more spectacular. Take some time off and walk the way up to the salt marsh straight to the Wadden Sea.

SCHLICKWATT WALK

Visiting the North Sea means taking a walk through the Wadden Sea. But how is it possible? It is all about to wait for the falling tide and water disappearing.

Therefore, it is about time for the natural spectacle. Take off your shoes and get ready when there is no water in sight. It is no chance in a life time, but while being there you should not miss it. No matter what season, walking across the mudlands at the coast is an absolute highlight and promisses you to slow down, even though you don't want to.

It is almost possible to visit some of the smaller isles by feet, but always be aware that you have the entire way back and while often not having the tide in mind you can get into real trouble. That's why you either book a round trip with a professional guide, or don't go too far out and have the beach nearby.

BUS TOUR IN CASE DANGAST IS NOT ENOUGH

Buskontor Grenzenlos is offering a huge variety of bus tours to different destinations like nearby cities, but day trips as well. Sadly I was not able to find a button to change their site to English, but the first thing that pops up is a Kontaktformular which means contacts and you can leave a message. Normally you should not have a problem with getting back an answer in English and you are good to go.
